Darren Bain
Owner

My mission and motivation to open function well was to develop a results based training facility providing members with the very best training, nutrition and lifestyle protocols to ensure they achieve a leaner, stronger, healthier physique.
Our mission here at function well is simple: To be Brisbane’s Most Personalised & Effective Training Facility, setting the the standard in the way gym memberships are done!.
There’s a poor level of service that’s on offer from a lot of gyms; Inexperienced, under qualified personal trainers, group training programs that create dysfunction and ultimately injury and a business model that is focused on sales rather than results.
Function Well Personalised Health & Fitness Centre was opened in November 2009 with a vision to be Brisbane’s most personalised and effective training facility!
I have been in the fitness industry since 2000, in this time I have operated out of commercial gyms and then onto owning my own personal training studios which I had built up a team of 7 trainers working out of a small studio completing about 185 sessions per week. We well and truly out grew the space which then give me the confidence to take the step to opening function well.
I’m very proud of the team we have here at function well, we have a great team that believes in and lives by the core values that makes function well a Results Based NOT Sales Based training facility.

QWA Level 2 Olympic Weightlifting & Sports Power Coach
ASCA Level 1 Strength & Conditioning Coach
Qualified Injury Rehab Trainer
Experience:
Over six Years as a Personal Trainer, Injury Rehabilitation Specialist and Strength & Conditioning Coach.
Coaching Philosophy:
When it comes to getting results in the gym, nothing comes close to combining a simple and effective eating plan with metabolic resistance training and anaerobic interval work. Performing 2-3 heavy weights circuits plus 2-3 metabolic conditioning classes each week will yield the best possible results when combined with a diet high in protein, green veges and good fats.
One of the philosophies that I coach by is the concept of “Kaizen”, a Japanese saying meaning “constant and never ending improvement”. If you constantly and consistently make small, incremental improvements to your lifestyle, nutrition and your training then ultimately the greatest results will be achieved.

Experience:
I have always had a passion for health & fitness & challenging the body & mind to achieve my goals in life. My background is 11 years of training under some of the best strength & conditioning coaches in Australia. I have played over 50 NRL games with the Parramatta Eels & North Queensland Cowboys. The experience I have gained over my years as a professional athlete is invaluable for me now as a Personal Trainer. I have now been a trainer for three and a half years & really love helping people adapt a healthier lifestyle, there is nothing more rewarding than helping someone achieve their health & fitness goals.
Coaching Philosophy:
My philosophy is being ‘healthy’ is more than just going for a walk each day – don’t get me wrong that is better than doing nothing but if you truly want to improve your health & wellbeing you must be prepared to change your eating habits, drink lots of water & do resistance work. Weights is imperative for all populations to be doing. But most importantly you must enjoy it & have fun!

Experience:
I have had over 5 years experience in the industry in a variety of different areas from big commercial gyms to personal training studios where I’ve enjoyed taking group classes indoor and outdoor, one-on-one and partner sessions. I have also worked at GNC as a supplement consultant which has given me the knowledge to help clients understand the importance of supplementation to help achieve their health and fitness goals.
Coaching Philosophy:
I have always had a passion for health and fitness and I decided early on that this was something that I wanted to share with other people. I have worked in a broad range of areas within the industry from outdoors, to gyms and studio’s. Over my 5+ years as a trainer, I have had the privilege to meet and positively influence many different people, and that is the thing about this industry that makes it unique. Training is not just about a short term goal, but about creating lasting healthy habits that you can continue for the rest of your life, and aiming to achieve that with every single client is my goal.

Coaching Philosophy:
I believe that when a person has a clear perception of what they want to achieve and maintains that strong focus with their approach to training, they will get what they want from it. I think the most enjoyable aspect of coaching is seeing people feel better about themselves. It is so great when clients come to me with a lack of self belief, and through training I witness them become inspired by their own results and empowered by their further potential.

Experience:
My two greatest passions in life are fitness and sport and throughout my career I have been lucky enough to have succeeded professionally within both industries. I have been a personal trainer for the last seven years and competed in professional football (soccer) for four years with Hyundai A-league teams including Gold Coast United, Brisbane Roar and more recently the North Queensland Fury.
My professional experience with sporting teams coupled with my degree in sports and exercise science and my years of service in the fitness industry has subjected me to an expansive array of top level strength and conditioning, resistance training, rehabilitation, group fitness and various cardiovascular training methods which has given me a well-rounded and superior approach to fitness training.
Coaching Philosophy:
My favourite quote is from the famous Lance Armstrong “pain is temporary, but quitting last forever”. This now overlooks the Functionwell gym floor in giant poster form. To me there is no truer or simpler saying, as there are many techniques, diets and gimmicks out there which will try to persuade you that weight loss or conditioning is easy. The truth is, there is nothing easy about exercise and therein lies its appeal. It’s supposed to make you uncomfortable but the results translate into comfort in everyday life.
If you don’t have a go or push yourself to your limits day in and day out then you won’t succeed, be it fitness goals or personal goals. So do something that scares the ‘shit’ out of you every day and have a red hot dig, jump in with both feet and work your socks off no matter how difficult, then take comfort and pride out of what you have achieved especially the little victories right next to the big ones. To sum it up, my philosophy is this: “You have to put the work it in to get anywhere. Nothing comes to you easily, however the reward you receive when you do accomplish those goals is extraordinary.”

Experience:
I’ve played hockey for almost 16years representing Western Area in NSW at regional level numerous times. During this time I was selected for 3 talent camps where the top up and coming players are selected to train with the top coaches from the Australian institute of Sport. I have also attended 5 State Championships and taken one home. Playing at this sporting level I’ve been exposed to some of the best coaching methods applied to athletes so started to develop a passion for more knowledge. I firstly completed my Cert 3 and 4 last year, then carried on with a Diploma of Sport and an Internship in Physical Athlete Preparation with KSI. For the past 6 months I was lucky enough to experience the hustle and bustle of the bigger commercial gyms until relocating to Function Well.
Coaching Philosophy:
Commitment to be the best, to strive above all is one thing I’ve always held on to. I expose this to my clients to bring the very best out of them and their training. Commitment brings results; it changes lives and can open new doors in life. A few years ago I read a quote for the all time boxing great Muhammad Ali; “Champions aren’t made in the gyms. Champions are made from something that they have deep inside them, a desire, a dream, a vision; ” To succeed in your goals you have all three of these qualities, a desire, a dream, a vision. If you attain these the sky’s the limit and nothing will stop you.

Brian Ellicott
Performance Coach
I’ve met some you already at the metabolic classes ( but please forgive me if I forget names!) and I’m hoping to maintain the high standard for the group training sessions you guys have here at Function Well. For those I haven’t met, my name is Brian and I flew in from the UK two weeks ago.
I have been working as a coach since 2006 and decided to take a massive chance and join a great team on the other side of the world. It was important for me to join a team that was focused on real performance and health, and not the marketing BS you see in the vast majority of gyms and dare I say “personal training studios”.
Overall, I’m more than impressed with all of the coaches and level of fitness of the members here at FW. You all stand head and shoulders above most of the people I have met within the fitness industry in the UK. I think if you gave a FW metabolic class to average UK gym goers, half would have died about 10 mins in.
I’m looking forward to being able contribute and hopefully enhance the high standard of coaching available at Function Well with my PICP level 2, BioSignature qualifications and knowledge. I look forward to meeting even more of you over the coming weeks and eventually remembering all of your names!
Experience:
Originally from the UK, Brian has been a coach and trainer since 2006. In that time he has successfully coached people from all walks of life and athletes from many different sports.
Coaching Philosophy:
Success does not result from chance, fate or even good fortune, but from a succession of successful days.” Focus, consistency and passion are the cornerstones for success in all areas of life, not just your training. My aim for every client is to learn how far they can push themselves to achieve the results they really desire. This drive will then carry over into all aspects of their life ensuring that they live lean, strong and well.

Experience:
There are a lot of different training philosophy’s out there, my best advice to all my clients is if you train hard, eat clean and keep everything consistent you are guaranteed amazing results. Your training regime shouldn’t be a chore or hassle, it should be an exciting lifestyle change with positive and great results leading to a better ‘you’. You also influence others around you to do the same.
Coaching Philosophy:
Put the hard yards in now, and expect an amazing transformation inside and out!
