‘What’s Really Causing Elevated Cholesterol & Heart Disease?

    By Dr Dwight Lundell

We physicians with all our training, knowledge and authority often acquire a rather large ego that tends to make it difficult to admit we are wrong. So, here it is. I freely admit to being wrong. As a heart surgeon with 25 years experience, having performed over 5,000 open-heart surgeries, today is my day to right the wrong with medical and scientific fact.

I trained for many years with other prominent physicians labelled “opinion makers.” Bombarded with scientific literature, continually attending education seminars, we opinion makers insisted heart disease resulted from the simple fact of elevated blood cholesterol.

The only accepted therapy was prescribing medications to lower cholesterol and a diet that severely restricted fat intake. The latter of course we insisted would lower cholesterol and heart disease. Deviations from these recommendations were considered heresy and could quite possibly result in malpractice.

    Champions of the week

    Ben – Now down to 16.7% – that’s 6% down in 10 weeks!!!
Peter – Down 1% and 1kg of pure fat this week! Down 6% overall!
Geoffrey – 1kg of muscle gained and now down to 11.1% body-fat!

    Quote of the Week:

“You will experience tremendous resistance when trying to develop a new habit. (This is not easy.)

Good habits are hard to form but easy to live with. Bad habits are easy to form but hard to live with.

Remember that successful people do things that unsuccessful people aren’t willing to do. It will take you around 28 days to form a new habit, but once it’s “ingrained” it feels more uncomfortable not doing the activity than doing it.” – John Carter Fitness

    Human Champion…

This week I wanted to go completely off topic.

As much as I love the world of health and fitness, I also like to take an interest in other areas of human achievement and remarkable stories.

Purely by chance during the week, I learnt about Sir Nicholas Winton.

Winton, born in England in 1909, has achieved some remarkable things.

During World War 2, he began service in the RAF – making his way from Airman to Flight Lieutenant in a 19 year career.

However, before his service in the war, he was able to organise the evacuation of 669 mostly Jewish children from Czechoslovakia during the initial stages of the Nazi occupation.

The details of his exploits remained secret, until 1988, when his wife found a scrapbook of the children’s details in their attic.

His work became the focus of a story presented on an English TV show called “That’s Life!” in the same year. Nicholas was invited to be an audience member during the show and this happened…

A remarkable an inspirational story of humanity.

As ever, I look forward to seeing you all working hard and making the most of life over the next week.

    Brian.

    Client questions…

In last week’s newsletter I asked you all to send to me any questions you have on nutrition, supplements and training.

I received a few questions about whether I believe supplements are worth the cost and investment.

    The short answer is yes.

Supplements will help you release the handbrake on your training results, improve your health and help you get to where you want to be faster.

But always remember, that although supplements are important and can make up for some nutritional deficiencies, they only supplement an already good diet.

And always buy a recommended brand with a solid reputation. My honest belief is that the Poliquin supplements we stock are the finest available. Read more

I’ve trained Maxine for 9 or so years now which in itself is a great achievement – to be consistent with her training for such a long time. Due to reducing my coaching sessions over the last few years one of the other performance coaches Nathan Barrett now trains Maxine on the other days when her and her husband, Dave, are not with me.

    More Muscle & Strength……

    By Darren Bain

When designing a program the most significant variable that needs to be considered, to achieve the desired training outcome of; strength, hypertrophy (muscle mass) or endurance, is the number of repetitions.

The general guidelines for repetition schemes are:

    • 1-5RM (repetition max.) will increase maximal strength with minimal gains in increased muscle mass
    • 8-15RM produces hypertrophy, with less of an improvement in maximal strength
    •  6-7RM will produce hypertrophy and strength.
    • 15RM+ is strength endurance

Achieving more muscle and strength at the same time can’t be a bad thing right? So with that in mind the rep scheme I’ve designed this month’s ‘Program of the Month’ around is 5-8RM.

Get Fitter, Have Fun & Help Support A Cause Close To Our Hearts – ‘The House With No Steps’

Winter is upon us and motivation for exercise can start to decline during the cooler months for many, when this happens I often recommend to take 10minutes to re establish your goals incorporating an event to reach – in other words something to train for.  So if you’re struggling for motivation, want something to train for or are a competitive son of a b%tch then we’ve got a few events over the next few months to get you on track, back on track or fulfill your competitive needs.

Read all about these events at the bottom of this page, but first read where the money raised is going – Tash and I would really appreciate your support on this one and hopefully you’ll get fitter along the way while having fun with fellow fw members.
